Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS AN INDEPENDENT DENTAL HYGIENIST? Direct access to care has changed considerably over the years and permits patients to see a dental hygienist for their preventive care without the presence of a dentist in their office. "The ability of a dental hygienist to initiate treatment based on their assessment of a patient's needs without the specific authorization of a dentist, treat the patient without the presence of a dentist, and maintain a provider-patient relationship." Source: The American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA)

WHAT CAN AN INDEPENDENT DENTAL HYGIENIST DO? We are able to do many of the same services you would recieve in a traditional dental office such as: cleanings, dental x-rays, sealants, periodontal therapy, etc.

DO YOU TAKE MY INSURANCE? We do submit to most dental insurances, but whether or not we are in network with that particular insurance plan and how your individual plan is written will determine coverage. It is encouraged to call your insurance company before your appointment to check on your specific plan.

WHAT IS PLAQUE, AND WHY IS IT HARMFUL? Plaque is a film that naturally accumulates on our teeth every day. Plaque is composed largely of bacteria and reacts with residue of food and beverages we consume. It will then release acids that gradually damage enamel and cause cavities and gum disease. Excess plaque can lead to serious dental and health problems. Without consistent brushing and flossing, plaque that remains on the teeth will eventually harden and becomes calculus, also known as tartar. This substance generally requires a dental professional to remove. More importantly, as plaque and tartar build up on the teeth, gums can become swollen and tender, which is an early symptom of gum disease. As gum disease progresses, it can break down and destroy the tissue and bone that supports the teeth. Research has shown a link between gum disease and serious health problems like stroke, heart disease, complications in pregnancy and diabetes. Combat plaque with regular brushing and flossing, minimizing sugary foods and beverages, and seeing a dental professional for regular check-ups and cleanings.

WHAT ABOUT WHEN YOU NEED TO SEE A DENTIST? If you currently have a dentist, we encourage you to continue that relationship. If you don't have a dentist, we are happy to refer you to one in your area.

I HAVE SENSITIVE TEETH, WHAT CAN I DO? You can try a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth. Try avoiding acidic foods and drinks and wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing as this could cause even more sensitivity. Grinding your teeth can also increase sensitivity and a night guard may be necessary.
